About

Me, looking uncharacteristically pompous.

Me, looking uncharacteristically pompous.

My name is Scot Colford. I am the Web Services Manager of the Boston Public Library where I am responsible for how customers access our services via the Web.

Before assuming my current position, I served as Applications Manager for the Boston Public Library where I managed the Horizon integrated library system and oversaw maintenance of other library automation software and electronic resources (aka, vendor-supplied, hosted databases).

I also occasionally teach the required course Technology for Information Professionals (LIS 488) at Simmons College Graduate School of Information Science as an adjunct professor.

Somehow, I have accidentally also become a writer and presenter on topics of interest to the library community, particularly Free and Open Source Software. Some of my writing:

  • (2010). Free and open-source software. In N. Courtney (ed.), More Technology for the Rest of Us: A Second Primer on Computing for the Non-IT Librarian. Englewood, Colo.: Libraries Unlimited.
  • (2008). Explaining free and open source software. Bulletin of the American Society for Information Science and Technology, pages 10-14.

Writing kind of freaks me out, so I’m hoping to hone my skills here.

Trivia:

  • My first career was as an actor.
  • My husband is library rockstar Michael Colford, Director of Resource Services and Information Technology at the Boston Public Library. I do not work in his division.
  • I have a tattoo of The Hungry Tiger of Oz on my shoulder.
  • I enjoy karaoke, Playstation 3, piña coladas, and taking walks in the rain.
  • Actually, I don’t like piña coladas at all.

This blog contains my personal observations and opinions which may not reflect those of the Boston Public Library, Simmons College, or the City of Boston.
